What is Estonian e-Residency, and what is it used for?

e-Residency is a digital ID card issued by Estonia that allows you to use Estonian online services and sign documents electronically.

It lets you register an Estonian company remotely, submit reports, and handle many business matters online. This is convenient for entrepreneurs, freelancers, and online store owners who need a company in the EU.

How much does Estonian e-Residency cost?

In 2026, the state application fee is €150. An increase to €165 from 1 January 2027 has been announced. There is no annual state fee for e-Residency.

Assistance from GTPartner.ORG costs €99. A package including assistance with obtaining e-Residency, company registration, and a registered address and contact person for one year costs €249.

State fees are payable separately. If you register a company online, an additional company registration fee of €265 applies.

How long does it take to receive an e-resident card?

The application review usually takes around 30 days. After approval, delivery of the card to your chosen collection point takes another 2–5 weeks.

In practice, you should allow extra time: additional questions, delivery, and scheduling a collection appointment may extend the process.

How do I apply for e-Residency, and what documents do I need?

Applications are submitted online through the official portal of the Estonian Police and Border Guard Board. You will usually need: a copy of a valid passport or an EU citizen’s ID card; a digital photograph; a CV or a link to information about your education and work experience; an explanation of why you need e-Residency and what you plan to do; a bank card to pay the state fee.

You do not need to have an existing business. You can apply if you are only planning to start a company. GTPartner.ORG will help you understand the requirements and prepare, but you must complete and submit the application yourself.

Do I need to travel to Estonia to collect my e-resident card?

Not necessarily. When applying, you can choose a convenient collection point from the official list, including locations outside Estonia.

However, you must collect the card in person: your identity document will be checked and your fingerprints taken. Collection by an authorised representative or home delivery is not available.

You must collect the card within six months of its arrival at the collection point. If you need to travel to another country, check its entry requirements in advance.

Does e-Residency give me the right to live in Estonia and pay taxes only there?

No. e-Residency is a tool for working online, not a visa, residence permit, or citizenship. The card does not give you the right to move to Estonia, work there, or cross the border.

Your personal tax residency does not change automatically either. Your company may have tax obligations not only in Estonia but also in the country where you actually conduct business.

Can I open a bank account with e-Residency?

Yes, you can apply for an account for your company, but the e-resident card does not guarantee that an account will be opened.

The payment service provider separately checks the owners, the company’s activities, and the source of funds. Some options allow you to complete the process online, while others may require an in-person visit or evidence of business ties to Estonia.

To help with opening an account, GTPartner.ORG recommends services such as Wise, Paysera, or Revolut.

Can an e-Residency application be refused?

Yes. Every application is checked, and the Estonian Police and Border Guard Board makes the decision. It is important to provide truthful information and clearly explain why you need the card.

GTPartner.ORG helps check your documents and understand the application questions. However, we cannot guarantee approval or influence the public authority’s decision.

How long is an e-resident card valid, and how do I renew it?

The card is valid for five years. To obtain a new card, you need to apply again, pay the state fee, and collect it in person at your chosen collection point.

It is best to start the process 2–3 months before the expiry date. Once the old card expires, you can no longer use it to log in to services or sign documents.

Your company continues to exist, and its reporting and tax obligations remain in place.
